When I think of saints, I think of dried-up old prunes, sour faces, finger-pointing, and no no no.
16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Mathew 6:16 ESV
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. Matthew 6:5 ESV
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. Matthew 23:33 ESV
Pharisees preached the law but did not follow it themselves.
When they did anything, they wanted it to be public so people would notice them and what they were doing.
Wait but that's not all there's more...
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Matthew 23:25 ESV
“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. Matthew 23:13 ESV
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. Matthew 23:27 ESV
5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, 6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues. Matthew 23:5-6 ESV
The Pharisees looked clean but on the inside they were unclean.
They only cared about their outward appearance.
They wanted their deeds to be seen by all and not in secret.
They loved a place of honor.
What do you think of when you think of a saint?
What verse is the turning point for this idea we are talking about?
Think about these to questions today as we will continue this tomorrow.
