But the fruit of the Spirit is longsuffering.
I had to look this one up for I did not know what it meant.
Longsuffering according to the Oxford Dictionary says, having or showing patience in spite of trouble, especially those caused by other people.
Some things I read in different commentaries talks about withholding the assertion of our own rights, in the face of wrongs and ill-treatment, or patience under injuries and provocation. (Taken from Meyer's NT Commentary, Expositor's Greek Testament, The Cambridge for School and College.)
How many times have you suffered? for Christ?
I wanted to know if these two words suffer and longsuffering mean something of the same thing but in my research, it is from two Greek words long and temper that combined to make the word longsuffering. It used the idea of slow to anger or having restraint instead of anger and such. so, the words are on the same plane but do not mean the same thing. My mind was blown when I read that.
11 We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, Colossian 1:11 NLT
12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Colossians 3:12 NLT
There is that word again Love. So far, each one of these fruits starts or deals with love in some way.
So, with all that I read, I'm not sure I still understand fully what it means to longsuffering but I get a clue or a picture of what it means, and I hope by us looking at it you do too.
God help us to understand longsuffering according to Galatians 5:22
God give us wisdom about this topic
