Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. James 3:13 ESV. I have been in a few Bible studies and in each one the leader is older than I am by either a few years or much older, this is what I look for when visiting a Bible study. As the verse above says who is wise and understanding and the older you are the more you have gone through so the wiser you are. That is what I have learned thus far (for the most part).
So, when I see that person who is older than me even by a year with that worn-out Bible I go and seek them out for wisdom. You cannot go to someone who is younger and seek wisdom on something they have not gone through because they may not have the best wisdom on the subject or situation. You can ultimately seek that kind of wisdom, but will it be the right kind of wisdom. I have learned that people try to talk and give wisdom when they have no clue what they are talking about or know what is going on. To be honest I have done this.
Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days. Job 12:12 ESV. To be clear here I am not saying that young people are not wise to some degree, we all have a level at each stage in our lives that we are wise and then wiser. The older you are the more you know and the more you might have the wisdom to help someone else.
My main point for today seek out good wisdom from someone who might have that wisdom and you can tell by the way their Bible looks (hopefully). There is so much out there today that is not sound wisdom, and they were dealing with this back in the days of the Bible which is talked about in Colossians 2:8 (ESV), See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. Christ is all wisdom, and all wisdom comes from God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; Proverbs 2:6. That kind of wisdom is talked about in James 3:17 (ESV), But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. Proverbs 19:20 ESV. Seek good wisdom today!!!!
This leads to what we will be talking about next which is wolves in sheep's clothing.
