Today's biblical hero is Jeremiah. He was known as the weeping prophet. During the Old Testament time, Jeremiah was the prophet of the southern kingdom of Judah. He was sent to the region to tell the people of the things to come which was the demise of the people in the region. He was born to a priestly family in Anathoth.
Jeremiah was whipped, thrown in prison, and his family tried to plot to kill him.21 Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth, who are seeking your life, saying: “Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, so that you do not die by our hand” Jeremiah 11:21 NASB. 2 Pashhur had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put him in the stocks that were at the upper Benjamin Gate, which was by the house of the Lord. Jeremiah 20:2 NASB. Jeremiah was alone with his family abandoning Him and was not allowed to marry as well. 2 “You shall not take a wife for yourself nor have sons or daughters in this place.” Jeremiah 16:2 NASB.
So with all this going He was called by God to proclaim God's message. in the early books, He called people to repent instead of false worship and social injustice. He preached a lot of doom and punishment. Jeremiah is known for His lessons that were dramatic in nature. but through all this, His message was ultimately about repentance and restoration. 4 I will build you again and you will be rebuilt, Virgin of Israel! Jeremiah 31:4 NASB.
He is considered the weeping prophet because He cried out to God many times. 18 Why has my pain been endless And my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will You indeed be to me like a deceptive stream With water that is unreliable? Jeremiah 15:18 NASB. In His time on earth, there was much pain and suffering and the people did not listen to Him.
Jeremiah is considered to be a biblical hero, for all that He did and proclaimed for God. He was a prophet of hope.
11 For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. Jeremiah 29:11-12 NASB.
