Yesterday we finished the holiday and Christmas series and I wanted to get back to the idea of, seek ye first the Kingdom. Yet seek ye his kingdom, and these things shall be added unto you. Luke 12:31. But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33. Both these verses will be the bread and butter of our series. We are to seek the kingdom and like how Matthew goes a little further saying we are to first see the kingdom, meaning everything else second and we are to put the kingdom first.
Before we go further in this series, I want to put this verse in context to the author, where it is in the bible, and what is going on at the time this verse is said in the bible. So, let's start with Luke.
Luke is the third gospel of the bible and contains 24 chapters. Luke was a doctor and is considered the only gentile who wrote in the New Testament. Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas salute you. Colossians 4:14. Why is Luke not considered a Jew but a gentile? because he was not circumcised so he was considered a gentile. according to many the book of Luke has been called the most beautiful book ever written.
Now, where does the verse come into view in the Bible and that is in Luke chapter 12. This verse comes under the heading Covetousness Denounced. this talking about greed and how we are to guard ourselves against it. And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: [a]for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Luke 12:15. It goes on to say that the father knows all that we need, and we should not seek the things that the world is seeking like food and water, life is more than those things so don't be anxious about these things. And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Luke 22. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: but your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. Luke 12:30.
From what I read, and for the sake of this message I am going only by what the Bible says and not using any other resource or book. It starts in Chapter 11 where Jesus is praying in a certain place and that place is not known but it goes on later to say that the pharisees asked him to have lunch and he went in to eat with them. Now as he spake, a Pharisee asketh him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. Luke11. Then He left there and many thousands gathered together. In the mean time, when [a]the many thousands of the multitude were gathered together, insomuch that they trod one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Luke 12:1. Where this verse takes somewhere in the city near the pharisees where He had lunch which it looks like from what it says in the Bible. nowhere does it say that he went anywhere or to another city so it seems to be that He was close to where He went out of that lunch, He had with the pharisees.
So that is Luke 12:31 put into context for the beginning of this series we will look at Matthew and see what is the same and what is different in the comparison of the two books and where the Bible verse is. We may know more about where this took place as well, we will see tomorrow.... Have a blessed day!!!!
