Today we are looking at one of the most beloved hymns of all time and that is Amazing Grace. I was all set to 5 hymns and their history then move on but I got in my spirit that I needed to do Amazing Grace so here is the history of that Hymn. Amazing Grace was written in 1772 by Englishman John Newton. before writing the hymn, he was a slave trader. Newton did not have a good childhood but one that was troubled, his mother died when he was very young, and he hated and despised authority. As I said he was a slave trader but after some time he was rescued and brought back to England. as they were on their journey Newton was crying out because there was a violent storm that almost sank the ship. The conversion of his spiritual conversion happened that day. when he had come back to England, he became a slave ship master and did that for several years. In 1754 when he got sick, he decided to stop all that he was doing and devote his life to God. In 1764 he was ordained as an Anglican priest. He wrote some 280 hymns and was quite popular in his day. Among the hymns he wrote was the greatest hymn in this day and age and that was Amazing Grace. Newton helped to abolish the slave trade and help England pass the Slave Trade Act of 1807.
Amazing Grace by John Newton
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
I have already come;
'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home.
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing god's praise
Than when we've first begun.
