speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your hearts to the Lord: Ephesians 5:19
Today we will be talking about what a hymn is and get a better understanding of a hymn. In all my research I did yesterday I got the same theme, description, and definition of what a hymn is. To sum up, all that I read a hymn in simple terms is a song that is usually religious. The word hymn comes from the Greek word ὕμνος meaning humneo and it is pronounced hoom-neh'-o which means songs of praise. That makes sense since; we were created to worship Jesus and His kingdom. In the Bible, it talks about songs of praise in acts chapter 16:25. (remember a hymn is a spiritual song). Now about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them; In my search thus far of what I found in the Bible in the New Testament they spoke Greek.
Hymns were usually poetic and literary in style. Hymns were composed for prayer or adoration and for the purpose of this series we will say it was written to Jesus and not a deity as said in my research. Hymns were created for us to worship Jesus and His Kingdom as well as for us to come together as Christian to be in unity as a people, as a church, and as believers. Each song that was created had a tone to it that either was religious or was inspired by the Bible.
So, what is a Hymn? Take time today to do your own research and find out what a hymn is and it's meaning of what a hymn is. I want you to have a level of understanding of what a hymn is and the definition because it is the basis or the foundation that will lead us for the rest of this series. Don't take what I said at my word, go and look it up as I said early.
Tomorrow we will go over and talk about the history of hymns in a condensed version. I find History to be very interesting and am looking forward to researching the history of hymns to present to you tomorrow.
