Make Hymns New, Bringing Back what was Lost: Some History of a Hymn in America and People Who Wrote Them.

Today we will continue where we left off yesterday and talk about the history of hymns in America and then highlight some of the people who wrote the hymns. The first book that was called a hymnal was printed in 1640 in Cambridge Massachusetts called The Bay Psalm Book. They tried to translate it into English so close to the original text that was in Hebrew that it was unsingable. A person who lived in Boston who was called William Billings to the first steps at a hymnal that the people of America Could sing called The New-England Psalm-Singer in 1770 and this book was the first one composed by an American. the hymns in the book were basically English metrical psalms. The first tunesmith was called First New England School and were the hymnals of the time. As things got better and they were able to read music easier they created more hymnals. in 1813 came about Folk hymns and the hymnal was called Wyeth's Repository of Music, Part Second. That is the start of hymns and hymnals in America.

Some important people who wrote and shaped hymns that we know today

Fanny Crosby was around from 1820 to 1915 and was a Hymn writer and poetess who was an American. Over her lifetime wrote over 8,00 hymns.

These are just some of the names that I found in my research, and I could go on and on with other names, but I will leave them just those names for this study. If you get time, please do your own research on American hymns' history and the names of people who shaped what hymns are today. have a blessed day!!!
