Seek Ye First: Verses Examined in Detail

33 But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33

31 Yet seek ye his kingdom, and these things shall be added unto you. Luke 12:31

Today we will look at the two main verses for this series and the meaning of what each part of the verse has to tell us or show us. For the purpose of this study, we will be using the ASV-American Standard Bible. we are going to go word by word.

Matthew 6:33 opens with but and Luke 12:31 opens with yet, they are one in the same meaning changing direction. We are to change our direction to Jesus and not seek other things.

Then both verses use the word seek, if we stop there, we do not know what we are to seek, so we have to read on. Seek is said 301 times in the ASV. So, it must be important.

In Matthew and also in Luke it says ye and what is ye mean Ye means in the oxford dictionary plural form of thou, but what is thou meaning? Again, from the oxford dictionary, archaic or dialect form of you. So, we meaning you are to seek and what are we to seek.

The next wording tells us what we are to seek and that His Kingdom. They both say His and that His is Jesus-God. but it is worth noting that in the verse in Matthew it says first. So, if go back up to seek which is important because of the member of times it is said in the bible, this is more important than to just seek but to first seek. So, before we do anything else we are to first seek the kingdom of Jesus -God. it also goes on in Matthew to talk about His Meaning Jesus-God's Righteousness. Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10. The meaning of righteousness means God's perfection is one meaning I found, and another was holiness.

So, we are to first seek His kingdom and His righteousness in Matthew, and in Luke, we are to just seek His Kingdom. For the purpose of the rest of the series, we will refer to the word first because that is what Matthew says and has a powerful meaning.

Both verses go on to say the same thing and that is all these things will be added unto you.

I leave it there for today because tomorrow we will talk about what will be added unto us. This is so important to understand that it gets its own post. (In the writing of this post, I did refer to outside sources to understand what the meaning of some things were).

All Verses taken from the ASV
