Jessus and Humor...

A pitfall is something that causes you to go off track and seek other things that are not what you are seeking. Pitfalls cause you to fall further and further from the things you are trying to seek. Anything can become a pitfall that keeps you further from what you are seeking. Humor/laughter is no exception to this pitfall rule.

I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure. So enjoy yourself.” And behold, it too was futility. I said of laughter, “It is senseless,” and of pleasure, “What does this accomplish?” I explored with my mind how to refresh my body with wine while my mind was guiding me wisely; and how to seize foolishness, until I could see what good there is for the sons of mankind to do under heaven for the few years of their lives.  Ecclesiastes 2:1-3. If laughter humor is used wrong, it can become a pitfall, become senseless as the verse says.

There are two types of humor in my opinion worldly humor and Godly humor. worldly humor swears a lot, brings people down, and makes fun of people in a negative way. Godly humor makes fun of people and things but not in a negative way, does not swear a lot or at all, and does not bring people down. both can be pitfalls, but worldly humor is more of a pitfall than Godly humor. This needed to be defined before we moved on. We know that God has a sense of humor by Ecclesiastes 3:4. Which says A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance. Which is the verse we have used throughout the series.

If you are only seeking humor/laughter in Jesus' Kingdom, then you are going to have a pitfall. There is a time for humor/laughter. A good example and a blatant one is laughing or telling humor during prayer at church. There are many ways that humor /laughter can be pitfalls. you can be too humorous and never be serious, leading to you not being serious when it comes to the things that deserve you to be for example and blatant one is during communion. you can focus and use humor more than Jesus' message and Gospel. you can joke too much and be that way with everyone and that can put them off to Jesus and His Kingdom. you can seek more humor in Godly things more than Jesus and His kingdom. Even though you are seeking a Godly thing it does not mean it is the right thing or that it will lead you to Jesus and His Kingdom. Too many more to list but how do we fight these pitfalls that can arise with humor/laughter?

The answer may be different for each of us because we are all different. But we can use this foundation of things to start with. do not be senseless like the verse we used today when it comes to humor/laughter. We need to discern when to be humorous and have laughter. Those two things will be a great foundation as I said to use.

I will leave it there for today and finish and wrap up tomorrow if it is God's will.
