Make Hymns New, Bringing Back what was Lost: A look at Breath on Me, Breath of God...

Written by Edwin Hatch, Breath on me, Breath of God is an English Christian Hymn, Edwin was a professor at the college of the University of Trinity in Canada as well he was a Church of England Vicar.  He was a non-conformist in his youth then he became ordained into the church of England. It was first privately published in 1879 then in 1886, it was published for the public. The first published version of the song was in a pamphlet called Doubt and Prayer. The song in the pamphlet was given the title Spiritus Dei which is Latin and means spirit of God. Later in 1886, it was published for the public in the Congregation Psalmist Hymnal by henry Allon.  Hatches widow republished it in Towards Fields of Light: Sacred Poems in 1890. It was later published in the Psalters Hymnal under the name Breath on Me, Breath of God.

Breath on Me, Breath of God.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
To do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
So shall I never die,
But live with Thee the perfect life
Of Thine eternity.

Genesis and the creation of man and of humanity via Jesus is the backdrop for this hymn by Hatches simple words.

Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living person. Genesis 2:7
