Acts 17:10-12

 10 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. Acts 17:10-12

Make Hymns New, Bringing Back what was Lost: Apply it Your Life...

Today we will continue talking about how we can apply hymns to our lives. Today we will talk about Researching hymns on your music app of your choice. This may seem easy and like dah but for a lot of people in a world surrounded by non-Christian music they tend to go towards to what surrounds them. So, it takes effort to seek out hymns and listen to them.

I have a hymn playlist on my iPhone, and I am constantly looking for new hymns to download and listen to. I Don't just download anything with the reminisce of a hymn, but I actually listen to it and made sure it is a hymn. the version that I listen to may not be the original or have all the words that the original had but it matches up with the original. You can just look up hymns on the internet and see if they are a hymn and lyrics somewhat match the song. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. acts 17:11. Just like the verse says we need to find if they use but let's put hymns in there and find if these hymns, we research are so.

Don't just take a hymn to be a hymn because it says hymn in its title of the song or in the title of an album or artist. There are many ways to look at and research hymns. I look at the internet as I said as well look at hymnals in my collection.  I also look at artists to see if they have a hymn album and if they do look at it and see if it matches up with hymns that I know or have seen. I do not know all the hymns.

Dear Jesus

Thank you and praise you for you being the king of kings, the great I am

Jesu help me and guide me to find hymns that are of your Kingdom and faith

Let me not be led down the wrong path when looking up hymns

In all things, you are great and glorious

use these hymns that I research and download to help to glorify You and Your Kingdom

In Jesus Name

Amen

Have fun looking up hymns, it is for me, and I love seeking out new songs that I have not heard of.

Matthew 21:41-43

41 They said to Him, “He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons.” 42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

‘The stone which the builders rejected

Has become the chief cornerstone

This was the Lord’s doing,

And it is marvelous in our eyes’?

43 “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. Matthew 21:41-43

Make Hymns New, Bringing Back what was Lost: Apply it Your Life...

As I have said throughout this series, I believe the greatest book is the Bible in the Christian faith and the second is a hymnal. the second is something that is lost to most of the people and the churches of today. That is sad and means that people and churches no longer want the richness and wisdom of hymns just easy songs that have meaning that is easy. By now you know that I love hymns and think how important hymns are to our Christian Faith. But they are missing more each and every year.

With all that how do we apply them to our lives today? Before I answer the question and get into that I want to say that it doesn't mean that you have to worship and do it as they did long ago or in the past, you can do it how you feel. There are several ways we can apply hymns to our lives. All the ways I will talk about are simple and easy to do because if it isn't easy Christians do not want to do it anymore.

The first is to go research and buy a hymnal that is Christian. It does not matter the religion the hymnal is as long it is Christian. Find a hymnal that you connect with and songs that you like. if You don't connect with it or find songs you like, you will not use it, and that defeats the purpose of why you bought it. I have a collection of hymnals and I look at them and read them sometimes. They hold richness far beyond most songs today. I read them to get encouraged and to seek the wisdom they have.

Some things to consider when researching a hymnal to buy.  Look and make sure it is Christian, that seems like a duh moment but there are so many things that look of the faith but are of the world. Find one you can read not just so it can look pretty on a shelf or if it is too old to look at a lot that probably isn't a good one to have. unless you're like me and collect them and have some that are able to look at a lot and others once in a while but are old. there are so many out there that it does not have to be a big heavy hymnal or a collection of hymnals like encyclopedias.

Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes’? Matthew 21:42. Just like the verse says have you never read the scripture? you can apply the same thing to Hymns have you never read the hymns? Even though the hymns are not as old as the bible they in my spirit to tell you that they hold the same things the bible does the richness, the wisdom, encouragement, knowledge and helpfulness that we can seek and glorify Jesus with and advance His Kingdom.

Revelation 21: 4-6

 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful." And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. Revelation 21:4-6

Make Hymns New, Bringing Back what was Lost...

Think of something ancient? What do you recall about hymns? Do you think of a Catholic service? Do you think hymns are ancient and are boring or like a Catholic service? As I said yesterday, I believe the most important book for a believer is the Bible and with all my soul I believe the second is a hymnal. I believe these songs that have stood the test of time deserve more than the garbage bin or to be shelved. We need to make hymns new.  And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Revelation 21:5. Jesus made all things new and that includes hymns. we often think that they were sung in old times but do not matter now. Was it not My hand that made all these things? acts 7:50. If God made all things, doesn't everything He has made deserves our respect and our worship?

When you think of a hymn you probably think of a choir or an organ or something of that nature. We need to change that way of thinking. Hymns don't need to be sung like that or be boring, they can be more than that. They can be updated with new, fresh life breathed into them. An example of this is a song sung by tree 63 and the song is called Amazing Grace. It is not sung like it was back in the day, it is updated and made modern but kept the original theme and Lyrics. As long as we do not lose the meaning and the original theme and lyrics, we can make these hymns new, so that we can receive the wisdom and the richness of these amazing songs.

Just like the verse says, And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2. Just like the transforming of the renewing of our minds, we need to renew everything in our Christian walk. If we let things become old, they will be old and they will not be something that we will want to do or sing because they became old, and just like old food that is nasty, you throw it out and not use it. We need to make hymns new every day so we can use them to bring down strongholds in Jesus' name, so we can bring people to Christ, and so we can grow deeper in Jesus and His kingdom. That which is old can be made new. When things go out of style they can come back and be made new. Let's make hymns new and bring them back to our alters and our churches.

Isaiah 12

A Hymn of Praise

12 And in that day you will say:

“O Lord, I will praise You;
Though You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away, and You comfort me.
 2 Behold, God is my salvation,
I will trust and not be afraid;
‘For Yah, the Lordis my strength and song;
He also has become my salvation.’ ”

 3 Therefore with joy you will draw water
From the wells of salvation.

             4 And in that day you will say:

“Praise the Lord, call upon His name;
Declare His deeds among the peoples,
Make mention that His name is exalted.

5 Sing to the Lord,

For He has done excellent things;
This is known in all the earth.
 6 Cry out and shout, O inhabitant of Zion,
For great is the Holy One of Israel in your midst!” Isaiah 12

Make Hymns New, Bringing Back what was Lost: Changed View...

So, after looking at the history of hymns and looking at 5 different hymns, does the view of hymns change for you?  I believe hymns are the foundation of the church and need to be brought back. just like bell bottoms and other things have come back, so do hymns need to make a comeback. They never should have left or gone out of style. In my heart and everything in my soul, the Bible is the most important book in our Christian walk and the second is a hymnal. We need to get back what we have lost and that is the part of the foundation that is lost. New songs are good and all, but they lack depth and our too simple: and do not get us to think or challenge us like hymns.

So today take time to open your hearts and mind to hymns.

Think about these things and pray about it.

Do I listen to only new songs because they are watered down, and I do not want to be challenged?

Does your view on hymns seem like they are just old songs that were sung once back in the day?

Where do I begin the are so many hymns for different religions, religion does not matter as long as you seek hymns.  (I listen to a lot of hymns and never as long as they point me to worship and seek Jesus do I stop and say what religion is this song from.)

research hymns in your music app and worship to them. Find new hidden songs you might like. with all that I have my pray is you discover hymns today and keep them in your heart just like the Bible.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16

Romans 3:21-26

21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Make Hymns New, Bringing Back what was Lost: A look at Amazing Grace....

Today we are looking at one of the most beloved hymns of all time and that is Amazing Grace. I was all set to 5 hymns and their history then move on but I got in my spirit that I needed to do Amazing Grace so here is the history of that Hymn. Amazing Grace was written in 1772 by Englishman John Newton. before writing the hymn, he was a slave trader. Newton did not have a good childhood but one that was troubled, his mother died when he was very young, and he hated and despised authority. As I said he was a slave trader but after some time he was rescued and brought back to England. as they were on their journey Newton was crying out because there was a violent storm that almost sank the ship. The conversion of his spiritual conversion happened that day. when he had come back to England, he became a slave ship master and did that for several years. In 1754 when he got sick, he decided to stop all that he was doing and devote his life to God. In 1764 he was ordained as an Anglican priest. He wrote some 280 hymns and was quite popular in his day. Among the hymns he wrote was the greatest hymn in this day and age and that was Amazing Grace. Newton helped to abolish the slave trade and help England pass the Slave Trade Act of 1807.

Amazing Grace by John Newton

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home.
The lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing god's praise
Than when we've first begun.

Biblical significance

17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17

Galatians 6:6-10

Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:6-10

Make Hymns New, Bringing Back what was Lost: A look at Bringing in the Sheaves...

In the 19th century in 1874 Bringing in the Sheaves was written by Knowles Shaw. Bringing in the Sheaves is a popular Christian hymn. The Protestant church is the church that mostly uses this song for Its services. on October 13th, 1834, Knowles Shaw was born in New London, in Morgan Township, Ohio. There was a party that he was playing the violin at and as the party was going on he stopped playing and was converted to the Christian Church. Soon after that he went and entered the ministry. Once in the ministry, he was mostly in the west and the south and with his wonderful voice they gave him the name "singing evangelist." everybody who encountered him said he had a wonderful voice. After preaching he began to write music and compose music. The last song that he wrote was Bringing in the Sheaves.

Bringing in the Sheaves by Knowles Shaw

Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness,
Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eve;
Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.
Refrain:
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves,
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.
Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows,
Fearing neither clouds nor winter's chilling breeze;
By and by the harvest, and the labor ended,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.
Refrain
Going forth with weeping, sowing for the Master,
Though the loss sustained our spirit often grieves;
When our weeping's over, He will bid us welcome,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.
Refrain

Biblical significance

 6 He who continually goes forth weeping,
Bearing seed for sowing,
Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing,
Bringing his sheaves with him. Psalms 126:6

8 Even as I have seen,
Those who plow iniquity
And sow trouble reap the same. Job 4:8

The Cheerful Giver

6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 2 Corinthians 9:6

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. Galatians 6:7

Romans 8:36-39

  36 As it is written:

“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Make Hymns New, Bringing Back what was Lost: A look at Be Thou My Vision...

Fifteen hundred years in the country of Ireland Be Thou My Vision was written by Dallán Forgaill in the sixth century. Dallán Forgaill was an Irish poet and was also known as St, Dallán. Many monks used His lyrics and chanted them as and were eventually turned into a hymns. ST.  Dallán was believed to have lost his sight and that is the basis for the first lyrics of the hymn. he later recovered his sigh it says to be when he wrote a poem to St. Columbia. This song is a prayer that Jesus will be our vision, our light, our presence, and our thoughts that are good.

There was so much more history on this hymn that I wanted to concentrate on just the lyrics.

Be thou my Vision by Dallán Forgaill

  1. Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
    Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art;
    Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
    Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
  2. Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
    I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
    Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
    Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
  3. Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
    Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
    Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tow’r:
    Raise Thou me heav’nward, O Pow’r of my pow’r.
  4. Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
    Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
    Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
    High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.
  5. High King of Heaven, my victory won,
    May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heav’n’s Sun!
    Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
    Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Biblical significance

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid? Psalms 27:1

Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times,
And the strength of salvation;
The fear of the Lord is His treasure. Isaiah 33:6

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He [a]made us accepted in the Beloved.

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:3-14

The Lord is good,
A stronghold in the day of trouble;
And He knows those who trust in Him. Nahum 1:7

19 The Lord God is my strength;

He will make my feet like deer’s feet,
And He will make me walk on my high hills.

To the Chief Musician. With my stringed instruments. Habakkuk 3:19

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; Matthew 6:19

and said: “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You? 2 Chronicles 20:6

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:37

There are any more verses that i found in my research but these are a few I have listed.

Acts 16

Timothy Joins Paul and Silas

16 Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek. He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek. And as they went through the cities, they delivered to them the decrees to keep, which were determined by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.

The Macedonian Call

Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them. So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Lydia Baptized at Philippi

11 Therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis, 12 and from there to Philippi, which is the [c]foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city for some days. 13 And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there. 14 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. 15 And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” So she persuaded us.

Paul and Silas Imprisoned

16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17 This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” 18 And this she did for many days.

But Paul, greatly [d]annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour. 19 But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.

20 And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, “These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city; 21 and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe.” 22 Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. 23 And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. 24 Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.

The Philippian Jailer Saved

25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. 28 But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.”

29 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34 Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.

Paul Refuses to Depart Secretly

35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying, “Let those men go.”

36 So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace.”

37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out.”

38 And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. 39 Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and asked them to depart from the city. 40 So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed. Acts 16

Make Hymns New, Bringing Back what was Lost: A look at Send the Light...

In Wilton Iowa, in 1856 Charles Hutchinson Gabriel, was born. at the age of 17, he followed in His father's footsteps and began teaching at many signing schools. Charles was not taught by anyone for the most part he was self-taught. Charles quickly became commended for His work as a composer and a teacher. Charles is credited with writing more than 8,000 either words or music. after moving to California at the church of Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco where he was a Sunday school music director, he wrote the words to the hymns Send the Light. there was to be a missionary meeting at the church and Charles was asked to write a song for the meeting and he did so. the first published song that Charles wrote was Send the Light. the full song as the author wanted it is only included in the Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs collection. The whole song is not in modern hymns books only part of the song the first 8 measures of the refrain

Send the LIght by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel

“Send the Light”
There’s a call comes ringing o’er the restless wave,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
There are souls to rescue, there are souls to save,
Send the light! Send the light!

Refrain
We will spread the everlasting light,
with a willing heart and hand, giving God the glory evermore,
We will follow, follow his command,
Send the light, the blessed gospel light,
Let it shine from shore to shore,
Send the light! And let its radiant beams
Light the world forevermore.

We have heard the Macedonian call today,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
And a golden off’ring at the cross we lay,
Send the light! Send the light!

Let us pray that grace may ev’rywhere abound,
Send the light, Send the light!
And a Christ-like spirit ev’rywhere be found,
Send the light! Send the light!

Let us not grow weary in the work of love,
Send the light, Send the light!
Let us gather jewels for a crown above,
Send the light! Send the light!

Biblical significance

Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your tabernacle. Psalms 43:3

The song is to believed to be based on Acts 16.

I like another version of this song but wanted to be as it was written by the author of the song and not the modern version.

Isaiah 12: 1-3

 And in that day you will say:

“O Lord, I will praise You;
Though You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away, and You comfort me.
2  Behold, God is my salvation,

I will trust and not be afraid;
‘For Yah, the Lordis my strength and song;
He also has become my salvation.’ ”

 3 Therefore with joy you will draw water
From the wells of salvation. Isaiah 12:1-3
