Study of Peter 1 & 2: Chapter 2 Verses 20-21...

20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them.

Verse 20

Defilement- other versions use pollution, the world's impurity, and the filthy things of this world

(Just to name a few).

So, we know by this verse that they have escaped the things of this world.

The they in this verse is talking about Christians in some way.

This happens as the verse says by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Them refers to their old sins they committed.

Overcome refers to them continuing in that sin.

The last part of the verse talks about and means the end will be worse than the beginning.

Worse is the opposite of better, which is the words Peter remembers of Christ's word.

18 For, while speaking out arrogant words of no value they entice by fleshly desires, by indecent behavior, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, 2 Peter 2:18

Verse 21

The CEV says better off and then goes on to say never known the about the right way.

Having obtained such knowledge is what the AMPC says.

Turned their backs, turn, turn back all leads to knowing the commandments and turning from following them.

These Commandments were the teachings taught to them as the elements of the Christian faith which all would have been taught before baptism.

They would have been better off if they had never known about the right way. Even after they knew what was right, they turned their backs on the holy commandments they were given. 2 Peter 2:21 CEV

For never to have obtained a [full, personal] knowledge of the way of righteousness would have been better for them than, having obtained [such knowledge], to turn back from the holy commandment which was [verbally] delivered to them. 2 Peter 2:21 AMPC

24 “But when a righteous person turns away from his righteousness, commits injustice and does according to all the abominations that the wicked person does, will he live? All his righteous deeds which he has done will not be remembered for his treachery which he has committed and his sin which he has committed; for them he will die. Ezekiel 18:24
