Study Check-in & James Chapter 4 Verses 1-2...

What have you thought of this study of James so far?

What have you learned so far in this study of James?

What is your favorite verse so far in James?

What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is the source not your pleasures that wage war in your body’s parts? You lust and do not have, so you commit murder. And you are envious and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.

Verse 1:

Some versions use lust or desires.

This verse talks about wanting what you don't have and are willing to kill for it.

This is why it says quarrels and conflict.

Some versions say wars and fighting.

We will fight and war among ourselves to get and have what we want.

Envy and jealousy come to mind, but in my research strife and contention came up for this verse.

9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are useless and worthless. Titus 3:9

23 but I see a different law in the parts of my body waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin, the law which is in my body’s parts. Romans 7:23

Verse 2

You lust for what you do not have so you murder for it.

You are envious of what others have and you cannot have it.

So fight and other versions say war instead of quarrel so you can get what you want.

You do not have it because you do not ask for it.

This means they were not praying to God for it.

God promised to give to those who are in Him the things they ask for.

6 You have condemned and put to death the righteous person; he offers you no resistance. James 5:6

15 Everyone who hates his brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him. 1 John 3:15
