Cell phone Jesus: Negative Impact Reading

Today I will be talking about what we read, watch, and listen to on our cell phones and the negative impact it has on our lives. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:3

There is so much we can read on our cell phones these days. It seems like there is endless reading that you can do on your phone, mound, and mounds of useless stuff that can read and can take up brain space.

I used to read the news every day but at the beginning of the year, I stopped because it was talking up headspace that could be used for better things. I love reading the juicy news about who in Hollywood did what and I love reading more about how our government was getting it wrong which is every story (almost) I would read. (Enough on that, that is for another message.)  I am here to tell you that what Beyonce is doing at the moment is not that important compared to what God is doing right now but we would rather read about the first one than read about what God is doing. Why? because we love drama, a juicy story, we love a good soap opera and want to escape to what we think is a better life. What we read matters and can have a negative impact on our lives, if what we are reading is destroying us then we should cut it out of our lives. We Need like the verse says not to be taken captive by spirits of the world and things not according to Christ, but I read what is good on our phones to bring us closer to Jesus.

So is what you are reading leading you towards Jesus or away from Jesus.  I cannot read the news anymore it just gets me upset and is eating away at valuable headspace that I could be glorifying Jesus. Blessed is the one who reads, and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep the things which are written in it; for the time is near. revelation 1:3. We need to which the verse says to hear God and the keep the things which are written in it. it talks about prophecy but anything from God is his word and command, and we should read it and keep the things that were read and take it to heart.

There is so much negative speech that we can read it seems endless. People bringing people down and we love to read that stuff. Facebook, Twitter, and all social media is taken up with stuff like this, and seems like people want to hear that rather than anything else. Negativity only feeds negativity.

I was planning on doing a message that included not only what we read but also what we watch and listen to on our cell phones, but it seems like the only part of that is the reading part for today. To end my message for today it comes down to this and that is we need to see if what we are reading brings us closer to Jesus or away from Jesus and if not bringing us closer, take a look at it and see if we need to cut it out. I know there is stuff we have to read for work or for school that will not bring us closer to Jesus or even personal stuff that we have to read that won't bring us closer to Jesus. I get it, but what I am talking about is all the other stuff you read. If all that you are reading is just stuff for school or work or personal that is not good either. There needs to be a balance between each one. The balance is not equal, but Jesus should be the major balance and everything else should be the rest of that balance because if not it will be our own destruction.

All Bible verses taken from the NASB and the ESV.
