For the last two days, I have talked about the company you keep, and people can lead you astray. I want to further drive this point home, so today we will look at Jesus and the company that He kept. For those who don't know or forgot Jesus before He started His ministry, He chose 12 disciples. And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles: Luke 6:13. 16 And He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, “Sons of Thunder”); 18 and Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. Mark 3 16-19. These are the names of the people that Jesus Chose to be his disciples, the company He chose to have. These were to be the ones Jesus would do ministry with, spend time with, and pour out His wisdom to. They were hand-chosen By Jesus.
15 and said, “What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?” And they set out for him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from then on he looked for a good opportunity to betray Jesus. Matthew 26: 15-17. One of Jesus' own disciples was to betray Him. They were hand-chosen by Jesus, how could this be? Jesus choose his company but for money, he chose to betray him. Judas chosen by Jesus was to stab him in the back as you would say it today. It had to happen for a prophecy to come true. When Jesus had said these things, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me. John 13:21. Jesus knew that one of His disciples would betray Him.
Jesus knew who would betray Him, but we do not who we keep as company will not betray us or lead us astray. Not everyone we choose will have our best interest at heart. we can have some discernment, but we will not ultimately know if someone will betray us or lead us astray. There will be signs that they may not be good company, but we can become blind to those things.
Now if we look at our cell phones, we have so many ways to keep company on our cell phones like Facebook Instagram, Twitter, contact and so much more. We choose who we want to keep as Friends or as company on our cell phones. having a million followers seems great but how many of those who are your followers have your best interest at heart. Having friends just to call them friends is not the best idea, is it? if you have the missionary mindset yes but still know that even then you might have to cut some people out of that mindset if they do not change and start to lead you astray or start to betray you. So, who you keep on your cell phone matters? Indeed it does.
To end today let's look at what happened to Jesus who knew he was to be betrayed by one of His own. 47 While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading the way for them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss? 54 Now they arrested Him and led Him away, and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance. 2 And they began to bring charges against Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King. 11 And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, dressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 63 The men who were holding Jesus in custody began mocking Him and beating Him, 33 And when they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. Luke 22,23: 47,48,54, 2,11,63,33.
Think about that and let that mediate in your mind that Jesus went through all that because of the company He chose and He knew what was to come, we do not. So choose who in terms of this series on our cell phones and in life pick, carefully choose who you keep as your company.
