James Chapter 2 Verses 12-16...

12 So speak, and so act, as those who are to be judged by the law of freedom. 13 For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.

Faith and Works

14 What use is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith, but he has no works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 

Verse 12:

This verse is talking about our words and actions.

Our actions and our words will be judged if not on earth, in Heaven on the day we go there.

The law of freedom or liberty as some versions say is talking about us being free from those things.

25 But one who has looked intently at the perfect law, the law of freedom, and has continued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but [a]an active doer, this person will be blessed in what he does. James 1:25

Verse 13:

We are to show mercy and if we don't, we will not be shown mercy when it comes to our judgment.

Mercy wins, glories, rejoiceth, as other versions say it all boils down to this, we will see victory over judgment when we show mercy.

13 One who shuts his ear to the outcry of the poor

Will also call out himself, and not be answered. Proverbs 21:13

Verse 14:

22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves. James 1:22

16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers and sisters. James 1:16

Verse 15:

This verse is talking about someone who does not have clothes or food to eat.

The next verse which is 16 goes with verse 15.

35 For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in;

Verse 16:

If we say the things they need and do not give, them what they need, the question stands what use is that.

That means what good does it do to just speak the words and not do them.

17 But whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother or sister in need, and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God remain in him? 1 John 3:17

James Chapter 2 Verses 7-11...

7 Do they not blaspheme the good name by which you have been called?

8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the Law as violators. 10 For whoever keeps the whole Law, yet stumbles in one point, has become guilty of all. 11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but do murder, you have become a violator of the Law.

Verse 7:

To blaspheme is to hurt someone with their mouth.

The good name is Christ.

Which you have been called is what God has chosen to call over you.

26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And for an entire year they met with the church and taught considerable numbers of people; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. Acts 11:26

Verse 8:

This verse is talking about loving your neighbor as royal law according to the scriptures. God is the king and decreed us to do this, so if we are as it says in the verse then we are doing well.

12 “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7:12

But look at verse 9 if we are not.

Verse 9:

We are not to show partiality.

Some versions say respect to persons.

So, we are to respect all people and not show favoritism.

If we do this, we will be committing sin and breaking the law.

if we are doing as God commands, we are breaking His law.

Gentiles Hear Good News

34 Opening his mouth, Peter said:

“I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, Acts 10:34

Verse 10:

According to this verse, if we keep the whole law but stumble at one point, we will be guilty of it all.

2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to rein in the whole body as well. James 3:2

Verse 11:

For God is the He who said it,

This verse talks about two different commandments- do not commit adultery and do not commit murder.

It is simply saying that if you do one of the commands that we are to do and do not do the other you will still be breaking the law or as the verse puts be violators of the law.

13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. Exodus 20:13-14

James Chapter 2 Verses 2-6...

2 For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and is dressed in bright clothes, and a poor man in dirty clothes also comes in, 3 and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the bright clothes, and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man, “You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,” 4 have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters: did God not choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court?

Verse 2:

This verse contrasting rich versus poor.

3 Now Joshua was clothed in filthy garments and was standing before the angel. Zechariah 3:3

Verse 3: 

This verse is talking about putting the rich at a place of importance and the poor anywhere.

11 And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, dressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. Luke 23:11

Verse 4:

The verse is talking about us being judges of people because of how much money and how they dress.

This according to the verse is evil motives.

24 Do not judge by the outward appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

Verse 5:

James is telling the readers to listen up and say that chose the poor to be rich in faith and heirs to God's kingdom. he promised these things to people who love Him.

19 Who shows no partiality to the prominent,

Nor regards the rich as above the poor,

Since they are all the work of His hands? Job 34:19

Verse 6:

By doing what they have done in the verses it has dishonored the poor man.

The verse talks about oppression not from the rich but the poor because they may drag you into court.

6 Does any one of you, when he has a case against his neighbor, dare to go to law before the unrighteous and not before the saints? 1 Corinthians 6:6

Found Study, Year, Heart Chapter 2 Verse 1...

How have you found the study of James?

Yesterday we paused for a check-in/reflection of the year of the crazy.

For some time now God had put on my heart to a study of James and that is why in this new year the study of James has come to you now.

If you don't know by now, I am the one physically writing this blog, but it is all directed by God.

So, let's continue with the first verse of chapter 2...

The Sin of Partiality

2 My brothers and sisters, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. 

Some versions say practice, partiality or favoritism.  

 The AMP gives us further understanding of this verse.

My fellow believers, do not practice your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of partiality [toward people—show no favoritism, no prejudice, no snobbery]. James 2:1 AMP

One example I read was about being rich verse being poor. To further this example let's look at it this way to show undue favor to the rich for what they have verse the poor who we might despise for them not having anything.

We are treat to each person if we are in Christ the same.

Pause and Reflect Crazy...

 It's a new year and with that comes new challenges. 

Today we pause from our study of James and reflect on our first glimpse of the year of the crazy with questions and Bible verses.

Yesterday in church did you worship like you had something to be thankful for? 

Did you worship with all your strength?

Did you worship like you didn't care what others thought?

Did you go crazy for God?

Yesterday at one point I thought I would lose my voice at church. I don't tell you this to boast about it, I tell you because we as a church, as believers need to go crazy for God and worship Him with all that we have (even if we lose our voices).

What changes do you need to make to go crazy for God?

Only you can go crazy for God, I cannot do it for you!!!!

Think about these questions and meditate on the Bible verses below.

If I acted crazy, I did it for God; if I acted overly serious, I did it for you. 2 Corinthians 5:13 MSG

35 For whosoever would save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s shall save it. Mark 8:35 ASV

7 But whatever things were gain to me, these things I have counted as loss because of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them mere rubbish, so that I may gain Christ, Philippians 3:7-8 NASB

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 ESV

30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Mark 12:30

James Chapter 1 Verses 26-27...

26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this person’s religion is worthless. 27 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Verse 26:

This verse is talking about controlling his tongue, as one bible says it. 

This means we must watch what we say and how we use our tongues.

We think we are doing faithful things but then do nonfaith things our faith is worthless.

The Futility of Life.

 39 I said, “I will keep watch over my ways

So that I do not sin with my tongue;

I will keep watch over my mouth as with a muzzle

While the wicked are in my presence.” Psalm 39:1

Verse 27:

God is holy and pure and that is what He wants us to be.

One Bible uses the word faultless.

God wants to be free from faults.

To do this we need to do the thing listed in the verses and that is to visit orphans, and widows in distress, and keep yourself unstained from the world.

13 for it is not the hearers of the Law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the Law who will be justified. Romans 2:13

James Chapter 1 Verses 21-25...

21 Therefore, ridding yourselves of all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who has looked intently at the perfect law, the law of freedom, and has continued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an active doer, this person will be blessed in what he does.

Verse 21:

Rid, put away, and lay apart are some of what the other versions say instead of ridding. 

This means we are to get rid of sin and the evil things that are in our lives and instead, we need to be planted in the word of God that is able to save us.

22 that, in reference to your former way of life, you are to rid yourselves of the old [a]self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, Ephesians 4:22

Verses 22:

This verse is talking about us doing what we read about in the Bible. We need to put into practice what the Bible says not just hear it and then do nothing. 

people who are hearers only do their own thing they think they are giving themselves good opinions or advice, but it leads to deceiving themselves.

The Two Foundations

24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and its collapse was great.” Matthew 7: 24-27

Verse 23:

This verse is talking about us looking at our true selves in the mirror, our sinful selves.

Some say this wasn't glass but polished steel, but others say it was glass.

If we hear only and do nothing, we will deceive ourselves.

12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I also have been fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12

Verse 24:

When looking at the mirror he sees his true appearance and when he leaves, he will forget it.

This means that he will not see what in his appearance that needs to be corrected.

Verse 25:

If we do what we hear not just be hearers and do nothing we will be blessed in what we do.

God blessed the people who apply His word in their life.

32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

James Chapter 1 Verses 16-20...

16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers and sisters. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. 18 In the exercise of His will He gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.

19 You know this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Now everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; 20 for a man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness of God.

Verse 16:

To be deceived means to not err according to what I have read and researched.

Or put another way do not sin.

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, 1 Corinthians 6:9

Verse 17:

God is not sin and cannot make us sin. God cannot make us err.

Only good things can come from God, not anything unholy or evil, so this verse is talking about all the good things that are from God and they come from heaven because that is where He resides.

The shifting shadows is talking about evil.

3 Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born [a]again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

Verse 18:

Some versions say begot or brought the word of truth.

The word of truth is the everlasting gospel and the holy spirit.

The second part of this verse talks about using the example of crops and that in the times of the Bible, they gave their fruits crops to God as a sacrifice, so we are to do the same (what we get the first goes to God). 

13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.

Verse 19:

Put in the KJ21 says, 19 Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 

We are to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and to have anger or wrath.

21 But He was speaking about the temple of His body. John 2:21

Verse 20:

The wrath of man does not work or bring about the righteousness of God. 

Some versions say work or worketh or promote.

This means our wrath does not promote God's righteousness. 

22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be answerable to the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be answerable to the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. Matthew 5:22

James Chapter 1 Verses 11-15...

11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so also the rich person, in the midst of his pursuits, will die out.

12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 No one is to say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it has run its course, brings forth death.

Verse 11:

The first part of the verse talks about simoon a strong wind that would destroy vegetation. This means that during this grass and flowers will wither away. This verse then turns to rich men, and it is the same principle. All that he has will wither away and be tested to see if he is ready for heaven or not.

12 saying, ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day’s work and the scorching heat.’ Matthew 20:12

Verse 12:

From what I read the first part of this verse refers to the nine beatitudes. Patience and trials encompass this verse. This means we will be rewarded if we endure the trials and patience of life. This reward is the gift of eternal life.

22 Blessed are you when the people hate you, and when they exclude you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man. Luke 6:22

Verse 13:

This verse is simple God cannot tempt us to do anything. We have free will and can do what we want. God cannot tempt us with evil. God does allow us to be tempted reference Job.

22 Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Genesis 22:1

Verse 14:

Carried away refers to the beginning of temptation and being drawn away from God.  Some versions say drawn or dragged. Enticed is talking about being baited by his own lust.

Verse 15:

This verse means that sin is present, and that person will or has sinned. this brings a man farther away from God. The second part of the verse talks about death and is temporal and eternal death.

21 Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. 22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 6:21-23

James Chapter 1 Verses 6-10...

6 But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8 being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

9 Now the brother or sister of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position; 10 but the rich person is to glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away.

Verse 6:

When we ask for wisdom as the verse before talks about, we need to come to God not doubting He will do it. We need to come bold when we ask.

The second part of this verse talks about the sea (winds) and some versions say waves which means that if you doubt what you are asking for in this case wisdom, it will be unstable, or there will be uncertainty. No two waves are alike in how they run their course.  So you will be chancing if God will Grant you Wisdom in this case.

21 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it will happen. Matthew 21:21

Verse 7:

How can a man expect anything if he doubts that it will be done?

This question goes with the idea of having faith that God will do what he says he will do and what we ask Him for.

Does this mean that God will not hear and answer the prayer?

God will hear and do according to that which God does.

Verse 8:

We are not to be double-minded.

8 Come close to God and He will come close to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:8 

4 having eyes full of adultery that never cease from sin, enticing unstable souls, having hearts trained in greed, accursed children; 2 Peter 2:14

Verse 9:

This verse from what I gathered is talking about humiliation. 

Other versions say brought low or are low.  

The low man will be exulted.  I also read that it will be like a flip the rich will be poor and the poor will be rich.

11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 14:11

Verse 10:

This verse talks about something similar to the last verse which says the rich will be brought low and this will happen by humility. The rich are neither secure in life or in wealth. The things the rich have can pass away and be no more.

31 and those who use the world, as though they did not make full use of it; for the present form of this world is passing away. 2 Corinthians 7:31

James Chapter 1 Verses 1-5...

James chapter one (We will be reading out of the NASB).

1 James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad: Greetings.

2 Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Verse 1:

Bound servant- bound to Christ.

Twelve tribes- believing Jews.

17 But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had led him out of the prison. And he said, “Report these things to James and the brothers.” Then he left and went to another place. Romans 12:17 

Verse 2:

We are to have Joy when trials come.

Some Bibles say temptation instead of trials.

Our joy is to be complete and nothing but Joy when we face temptation/trials in our lives.

12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in this same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:12 

Verse 3:

Some versions use trying, proving, or enduring which leads to the idea of testing.

This verse talks about patience and by having patience this will produce endurance of faith.

7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which perishes though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 1 Peter 1:7

Verse 4:

Patience needs to develop and be unhindered and made to completion. This means that patience needs to reach its end, this could be give reference to the Lord's work.

19 By your endurance you will gain your lives. Luke 21:19

Verse 5:

This is talking about if we need wisdom just ask God for wisdom. If we ask for this God will grant us wisdom because He is a good and generous God.

9 So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, to discern between good and evil. For who is capable of judging this great people of Yours?” 1 Kings 3:9

James, The Man, Book, Time Overview & Prayer...

Today we start the book of James but before we get into the book itself here is a quick overview of the book.

The book of James in the Bible is written by James Jesus' half-brother written about 48-49 A.D. 

This book of the Bible is found in the New Testament.

The book of James is written about how to be a Christian with genuine faith in our lives.

This book was written to encourage the Jews who were Christians to walk in faith and be bold for Jesus.

They were being persecuted for their faith in Jesus and this book encourages them to endure for Christ.

In my research, the book of James is to resemble that of the Old Testament book of Proverbs.

Proverbs was a book of the Bible that was to teach wisdom to God's people.

This book resembles the books of the Jews most out of all the other books in the New Testament.

Dear God

As we go through James show us what you have for us

Help us to understand the book of James and all it has for us

Be with us and protect us from all evil as we go through this book of the Bible

In Jesus Name

Amen

So, erase all you know about James, and let's look with a fresh set of eyes and minds again or if you never read it for the first time.
