Acts 12

 Peter’s Arrest and Escape

12 Now at that time Herod [Agrippa I] the king [of the Jews] arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to harm them. 2 And he had James the brother of John put to death with a sword; 3 and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to have Peter arrested as well. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread [the Passover week]. 4 When he had seized Peter, he put him in prison, turning him over to four squads of soldiers of four each to guard him [in rotation throughout the night], planning after the Passover to bring him out before the people [for execution]. 5 So Peter was kept in prison, but fervent and persistent prayer for him was being made to God by the church.

6 The very night before Herod was to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries were in front of the door guarding the prison. 7 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared [beside him] and a light shone in the cell. The angel struck Peter’s side and awakened him, saying, “Get up quickly!” And the chains fell off his hands. 8 The angel said to him, “Prepare yourself and strap on your sandals [to get ready for whatever may happen].” And he did so. Then the angel told him, “Put on your robe and follow me.” 9 And Peter went out following the angel. He did not realize that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. 10 When they had passed the first guard and the second, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city. Of its own accord it swung open for them; and they went out and went along one street, and at once the angel left him. 11 When Peter came to his senses, he said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel and has rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting [to do to me].” 12 When he realized what had happened, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, who was also called Mark, where many [believers] were gathered together and were praying continually [and had been praying all night]. 13 When he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant-girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she failed to open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter was standing in front of the gateway. 15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind!” But she kept insisting that it was so. They kept saying, “It is his angel!” 16 But [meanwhile] Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the door and saw him, they were completely amazed. 17 But motioning to them with his hand to be quiet and listen, he described how the Lord had led him out of the prison. And he said, “Report these things to [d]James and the brothers and sisters.” Then he left and went to another place.

18 Now when day came, there was no small disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. 19 When Herod had searched for him and could not find him, he interrogated the guards and commanded that they be led away to execution. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea [Maritima] and spent some time there.

Death of Herod

20 Now Herod [Agrippa I] was extremely angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon; and their delegates came to him in a united group, and after persuading Blastus, the king’s chamberlain [to support their cause], they asked for peace, because their country was fed by [imports of grain and other goods from] the king’s country. 21 On an appointed day Herod dressed himself in his royal robes, sat on his throne (tribunal, rostrum) and began delivering a speech to the people. 22 The assembled people kept shouting, “It is the voice of a god and not of a man!” 23 And at once an angel of the Lord struck him down because he did not give God the glory [and instead permitted himself to be worshiped], and he was eaten by worms and died [five days later].

24 But the word of the Lord [the good news about salvation through Christ] continued to grow and spread [increasing in effectiveness].

25 Barnabas and Saul came back from Jerusalem when they had completed their mission, bringing with them John, who was also called Mark. Acts 12

4 Gospels: Meaning...

Before we get to the four gospels, I wanted to talk about what a gospel is. The meaning of the word gospel means good news. This word comes from the Greek word ευαγγέλιο. The Greek language is what the News Testament is written in. From what I researched the exact language was the Koine Language Which was the common language of the people This good news that the gospels talk about is the good news about Jesus. The beginning of the [facts regarding the] good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Mark 1:1. The gospel [that is, the good news regarding the way of salvation] must first be preached to all the [Gentile] nations. Mark 13:10. Both verses talk about good news and that good news is Jesus Christ. Who doesn't want good news right?

The whole four books that make up the gospels are for the good news to be preached to all people. The gospel [that is, the good news regarding the way of salvation] must first be preached to all the [Gentile] nations. Mark 13:10. This good news called the gospel was not written to keep it a secret or to keep it in a closet but to share with the world and it is about Jesus and what He did and what He was about. in the bible I am using which is the Amplified Bible it is said 80 times in the New Testament alone. So, that gets us to look and listen up to what is being said. This isn't me saying this but it's the truth. When you walk into a place and see sign after sign saying don't eat food in here you are going to look up and listen to what the sign says right? Same with when you see the gospel so many times in the Bible, in total in AMP it said 102 and it talks about various things, but it is all around this good news and that good news is Jesus Christ. The Bible was written not to glorify the people who are in the Bible or to tell them fleshly things but to tell of the good news and that good news is Jesus Christ.

Plans to Give You the Future You Hope For

29 1-2 This is the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to what was left of the elders among the exiles, to the priests and prophets and all the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken to Babylon from Jerusalem, including King Jehoiachin, the queen mother, the government leaders, and all the skilled laborers and craftsmen.

3 The letter was carried by Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah had sent to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. The letter said:

4 This is the Message from God-of-the-Angel-Armies, Israel’s God, to all the exiles I’ve taken from Jerusalem to Babylon:

5 “Build houses and make yourselves at home.

“Put in gardens and eat what grows in that country.

6 “Marry and have children. Encourage your children to marry and have children so that you’ll thrive in that country and not waste away.

7 “Make yourselves at home there and work for the country’s welfare.

“Pray for Babylon’s well-being. If things go well for Babylon, things will go well for you.”

8-9 Yes. Believe it or not, this is the Message from God-of-the-Angel-Armies, Israel’s God: “Don’t let all those so-called preachers and know-it-alls who are all over the place there take you in with their lies. Don’t pay any attention to the fantasies they keep coming up with to please you. They’re a bunch of liars preaching lies—and claiming I sent them! I never sent them, believe me.” God’s Decree!

10-11 This is God’s Word on the subject: “As soon as Babylon’s seventy years are up and not a day before, I’ll show up and take care of you as I promised and bring you back home. I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.

12 “When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen.

13-14 “When you come looking for me, you’ll find me.

“Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.” God’s Decree.

“I’ll turn things around for you. I’ll bring you back from all the countries into which I drove you”—God’s Decree—“bring you home to the place from which I sent you off into exile. You can count on it.

15-19 “But for right now, because you’ve taken up with these new-fangled prophets who set themselves up as ‘Babylonian specialists,’ spreading the word ‘God sent them just for us!’ God is setting the record straight: As for the king still sitting on David’s throne and all the people left in Jerusalem who didn’t go into exile with you, they’re facing bad times. God-of-the-Angel-Armies says, ‘Watch this! Catastrophe is on the way: war, hunger, disease! They’re a barrel of rotten apples. I’ll rid the country of them through war and hunger and disease. The whole world is going to hold its nose at the smell, shut its eyes at the horrible sight. They’ll end up in slum ghettos because they wouldn’t listen to a thing I said when I sent my servant-prophets preaching tirelessly and urgently. No, they wouldn’t listen to a word I said.’” God’s Decree.

20-23 “And you—you exiles whom I sent out of Jerusalem to Babylon—listen to God’s Message to you. As far as Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah are concerned, the ‘Babylonian specialists’ who are preaching lies in my name, I will turn them over to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will kill them while you watch. The exiles from Judah will take what they see at the execution and use it as a curse: ‘God fry you to a crisp like the king of Babylon fried Zedekiah and Ahab in the fire!’ Those two men, sex predators and prophet-impostors, got what they deserved. They pulled every woman they got their hands on into bed—their neighbors’ wives, no less—and preached lies claiming it was my Message. I never sent those men. I’ve never had anything to do with them.” God’s Decree.

“They won’t get away with a thing. I’ve witnessed it all.”

24-26 And this is the Message for Shemaiah the Nehelamite: “God-of-the-Angel-Armies, the God of Israel, says: You took it on yourself to send letters to all the people in Jerusalem and to the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah and the company of priests. In your letter you told Zephaniah that God set you up as priest replacing priest Jehoiadah. He’s put you in charge of God’s Temple and made you responsible for locking up any crazy fellow off the street who takes it into his head to be a prophet.

27-28 “So why haven’t you done anything about muzzling Jeremiah of Anathoth, who’s going around posing as a prophet? He’s gone so far as to write to us in Babylon, ‘It’s going to be a long exile, so build houses and make yourselves at home. Plant gardens and prepare Babylonian recipes.’”

29 The priest Zephaniah read that letter to the prophet Jeremiah.

30-32 Then God told Jeremiah, “Send this Message to the exiles. Tell them what God says about Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Shemaiah is preaching lies to you. I didn’t send him. He is seducing you into believing lies. So this is God’s verdict: I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his whole family. He’s going to end up with nothing and no one. No one from his family will be around to see any of the good that I am going to do for my people because he has preached rebellion against me.” God’s Decree. 15 Because ye have said, Jehovah hath raised us up prophets in Babylon; 16 thus saith Jehovah concerning the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and concerning all the people that dwell in this city, your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity; 17 thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so bad. 18 And I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an execration, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them; 19 because they have not hearkened to my words, saith Jehovah, wherewith I sent unto them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith Jehovah. 20 Hear ye therefore the word of Jehovah, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

4 Gospels: Translated? Continued...

The thought side of the spectrum is the most loosely translated version of the scriptures you can get. The word side of the spectrum is the most literal wording you can get to the original scriptures. But what is the spectrum? It is based on how close the wording is to the original text.

               

If you take a look at the spectrum of where the most popular Bibles are you will see what I mean. On the left, you see the thought and the end of that spectrum of thought is The Message Bible. the message is the most loosely translated Bible there is to date. there may be others like it but from what I researched and was taught on this, that is the one that is at the end of the spectrum for thought.

If you take a look at the right side of the spectrum you see the word side of the spectrum and at the end of that is the American Standard Bible (even though it isn't listed above). Again, to point out this is not from me but from what I was taught on and researched. To mean it seems weird that some Bible with the word American in the title is the closest to the original scripture. Most people when thinking of the closest accuracy to the Bible, they think of King James automatically and even I did that before I was taught on this.

Let's take a look at the most popular Bible today and that is the New International Version (NIV). It lies somewhere in the middle. This means that it is not too thought-based on the spectrum and not too word-based on the spectrum.

Where do I tend to read out of on the spectrum and that is the word side of the spectrum. My favorite Bible's to read out of is the ASV, KJV, and the AMP. Yes, I like the hath and thou's, it has a richness to them, and that is why read out of those Bibles for that reason.

Entering Jerusalem on a Colt

11 1-3 When they were nearing Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany on Mount Olives, he sent off two of the disciples with instructions: “Go to the village across from you. As soon as you enter, you’ll find a colt tethered, one that has never yet been ridden. Untie it and bring it. If anyone asks, ‘What are you doing?’ say, ‘The Master needs him, and will return him right away.’”

4-7 They went and found a colt tied to a door at the street corner and untied it. Some of those standing there said, “What are you doing untying that colt?” The disciples replied exactly as Jesus had instructed them, and the people let them alone. They brought the colt to Jesus, spread their coats on it, and he mounted.

8-10 The people gave him a wonderful welcome, some throwing their coats on the street, others spreading out rushes they had cut in the fields. Running ahead and following after, they were calling out,

Hosanna!
Blessed is he who comes in God’s name!
Blessed the coming kingdom of our father David!
Hosanna in highest heaven!

11 He entered Jerusalem, then entered the Temple. He looked around, taking it all in. But by now it was late, so he went back to Bethany with the Twelve.

The Cursed Fig Tree

12-14 As they left Bethany the next day, he was hungry. Off in the distance he saw a fig tree in full leaf. He came up to it expecting to find something for breakfast, but found nothing but fig leaves. (It wasn’t yet the season for figs.) He addressed the tree: “No one is going to eat fruit from you again—ever!” And his disciples overheard him.

15-17 They arrived at Jerusalem. Immediately on entering the Temple Jesus started throwing out everyone who had set up shop there, buying and selling. He kicked over the tables of the bankers and the stalls of the pigeon merchants. He didn’t let anyone even carry a basket through the Temple. And then he taught them, quoting this text:

My house was designated a house of prayer for the nations;
You’ve turned it into a hangout for thieves.

18 The high priests and religion scholars heard what was going on and plotted how they might get rid of him. They panicked, for the entire crowd was carried away by his teaching.

19 At evening, Jesus and his disciples left the city.

20-21 In the morning, walking along the road, they saw the fig tree, shriveled to a dry stick. Peter, remembering what had happened the previous day, said to him, “Rabbi, look—the fig tree you cursed is shriveled up!”

22-25 Jesus was matter-of-fact: “Embrace this God-life. Really embrace it, and nothing will be too much for you. This mountain, for instance: Just say, ‘Go jump in the lake’—no shuffling or hemming and hawing—and it’s as good as done. That’s why I urge you to pray for absolutely everything, ranging from small to large. Include everything as you embrace this God-life, and you’ll get God’s everything. And when you assume the posture of prayer, remember that it’s not all asking. If you have anything against someone, forgive—only then will your heavenly Father be inclined to also wipe your slate clean of sins.”

His Credentials

27-28 Then when they were back in Jerusalem once again, as they were walking through the Temple, the high priests, religion scholars, and leaders came up and demanded, “Show us your credentials. Who authorized you to speak and act like this?”

29-30 Jesus responded, “First let me ask you a question. Answer my question and then I’ll present my credentials. About the baptism of John—who authorized it: heaven or humans? Tell me.”

31-33 They were on the spot, and knew it. They pulled back into a huddle and whispered, “If we say ‘heaven,’ he’ll ask us why we didn’t believe John; if we say ‘humans,’ we’ll be up against it with the people because they all hold John up as a prophet.” They decided to concede that round to Jesus. “We don’t know,” they said.

Jesus replied, “Then I won’t answer your question either.” Mark 11 MSG (thought side of the spectrum)

4 Gospels: Translated?

 To start off with this that I going to teach you isn't something that I came up with out of thin or my opinion, it is something that I was taught on and have done my research on as well (the main points, ideas, and concepts.

So, what is with all the translations and what does each different translation mean. Each Bible that is an actual Bible is the Word of the Lord, but it is translated differently from or thought from word. This means that the translations you read of the Bible is either on the thought side of the spectrum or on the word side of the spectrum or something in between. Let me explain further so you can understand, every time you update the Bible into modern English you lose what the author was trying to say in the original text. This means what you are reading is a watered-down version of what the Bible said (actually). 

Let's look at a verse of a thought verses word the Bible to see in action what I am talking about, so Let's look at Romans 8:1. The first verse is the thought side of the spectrum,8 1-2 With the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah, that fateful dilemma is resolved. Those who enter into Christ’s being here for us no longer have to live under a continuous, low-lying black cloud. A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, like a strong wind, has magnificently cleared the air, freeing you from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the hands of sin and death. The second verse is the word side of the spectrum, 8 There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus. Can you see the difference?

Let's look at another example which is in Mark 11:24 (thought) and it says, 22-25 Jesus was matter-of-fact: “Embrace this God-life. Really embrace it, and nothing will be too much for you. This mountain, for instance: Just say, ‘Go jump in the lake’—no shuffling or hemming and hawing—and it’s as good as done. That’s why I urge you to pray for absolutely everything, ranging from small to large. Include everything as you embrace this God-life, and you’ll get God’s everything. And when you assume the posture of prayer, remember that it’s not all asking. If you have anything against someone, forgive—only then will your heavenly Father be inclined to also wipe your slate clean of sins.”  In Mark 11:24 (word) and it says, 24 Therefore I say unto you, All things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

The thought side of the spectrum is the most loosely translated version of the scriptures you can get. The word side of the spectrum is the most literal wording you can get to the original scriptures.

Next Great Series...

 We will be looking at the 4 gospels, unpacking them, and seeing the difference and comparisons. We will start with chapter one of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and go from there. The series will be entitled "4 gospels". Today as we prepare for this great series God has in store for us, we will take the next few days and look at the bible and the different translations so, we can better understand the 4 Gospels. During this series, I will make no opinions or thoughts, everything will be strictly bible meaning to understand a verse or meaning we will look at other verses and such. Everything in this series will be and around the word of the lord only and the opportunity to glorify Jesus through His word.  Through Jesus I will also throughout this series share songs that are based around or talk about the four gospels.

So, take time to wipe all that you know about the 4 gospels, so you can come with fresh eyes this going to impact your life in ways you may never know.  Get ready to understand the Bible and the 4 gospels in new ways and have a better understanding as well.

Matthew 28

Come as You Are: Wrap-up

Today as we wrap us this series, I want to take the time to tell you that once you come as you are, it doesn't me that Jesus will take it all away. He has the power to do so but sometimes He uses what we are going through to teach and reproof and correct us. Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16. Just like the word of God is used for that, Jesus uses what we are going through to do the same. 

but through it all he will be with you and he has overcome the world. These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33. 

Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20. Jesus will be with us once we come as we are to Him, and he will be with us through it all until the end of the ages.

So, whatever you need to come just as you are, to Jesus, go forth in boldness and proclaim it today it will change your life.

And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is the good and [acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2.

Let us come as we are and by us being transformed by Jesus, renew our minds so, we can have a relationship with Him and turn towards Him.
